Hanukkah: Meaning, Significance And Traditions

Hanukkah is a word that would be vague for most of us. What really is Hanukkah and why is it celebrated? Hanukkah is “festival of lights” commemorated by all the Jews around the world. It is celebrated for eight days and nights and begins on 25 Kislev of the Jewish calendar.

For this year, Hanukkah starts on sunset of Dec. 16 and will end on Dec. 24. About.com says that Hanukkah is a word that means “dedication” in Hebrew.

Hanukkah is celebrated to remember the re-dedication of the temple in Jerusalem after the Jews won over Syrian-Greeks in 165 B.C.E. to claim their religious freedom. Legend tells that during the mêlée, the Jewish people have oil that can only last for one night. But miracle happened and it lasted for eight nights.

Hanukkah for the Jews is the time to commemorate the victory of spirituality over materiality, of purity over adulteration, and of light over darkness.

Berlin Jews Celebrate Hanukkah

Significance of Hanukkah:

Hanukkah is a simple tradition celebrated by the Jews. However, in modern times, it claims popularity as it is celebrated days before Christmas. Hanukkah falls on a different day every year depending on the 25th day of the Jewish calendar.

Since a large population of the Jews lives in Christian communities, Hanukkah is celebrated like Christmas. Children receive a gift for a period of eight nights.

Hanukkah Menorah

Hanukkah menorah is the candelabrum that holds nine candles that are lighted every night for eight nights. The candle in the middle is called the Shamash that means “attendant” and is used to light the other candles.

Hanukkah Traditions:

Eating Fried Foods

Since Jews belong to different communities, there are varied ways on which Hanukkah is celebrated. But the most common of all the traditions are eating fried foods, lighting the hanukkiyah and spinning the dreidel.

Fried foods are eaten during the holiday to commemorate the significance of oil in Hanukkah. Latkes and Sufganiyot are fried foods that are usually prepared and eaten during eight days and eight nights. Sufganiyot are fried donuts filled with jellies and are coated with confectioners’ sugar.

Latkes are pancakes fried in oil and served with applesauce. It is made from potatoes and onions.

Lighting the Hanukkiyah

Hanukkiyah is the traditional candelabrum consisting of eight candleholders with an extra candleholder designed above the rest of the candleholders. In every Hanukkah, hanukkiyah is lighted to commemorate the Hanukkah oil.

Spinning the dreidel

In every Hanukkah celebration, it would be incomplete without spinning the dreidel. It is a traditional game wherein Hebrew letters were written on each side of the dreidel. Children enjoy playing this and usually involve raisins, nuts, candy and most especially pot of gelt, chocolate coins that is covered with tin foil.

Hanukkah is sometimes called as Chanukkah or Chanukah.

#Happy Hanukkah!

Processed Foods That Should Be Out Of Your Shopping List

Processed foods are synonymous to obesity, type II Diabetes and high blood pressure. It has bad reputation for bringing huge calories and elevated blood glucose and blood pressure.

Cost Plus World Market's Share The Joy Event With Curtis Stone

Processed foods are easily available and save time in cooking, but without knowing the unhealthy effects of these foods, we may find ourselves suffering from the most feared lifestyle diseases.

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Spokesperson Andrea Giancoli, MPH, RD considers white bread refined and is one of the processed foods because fiber has been removed during the processing. “It’s also processed, but keep in mind, that as a cook you’re doing processing yourself.”

Eating Right stated that processed foods can be classified into minimally processed, food with added ingredients, ready-to-eat-foods, heavily processed foods and foods processed at peak to seal freshness and nutrients.

As we know processed foods had undergone chemical process, and are considered unhealthy, processed foods can also bring benefits to our health. Foods that are fortified with certain vitamins and minerals such as iron, calcium, vitamin D are good for the body.

Milk, juices, cereals, and canned fruits are some of the fortified products that are considered valuable for health. Pre-cut vegetables seen in supermarkets are also processed foods that are good to buy aside from its health benefits. It saves a big part of your time in cutting.

Here are processed foods that should be out of your Fridge and should not be included in your next shopping list:

Refined sweeteners, known as corn syrup or cane juice or brown rice syrup are now present in the foods we usually eat including breads, yogurts, flavored oatmeal, beverages, crackers, and salad dressings. Go for honey and maple syrup that are not chemically processed.

Artificial Ingredients such as artificial sweeteners (saccharin, sucralose, and aspartame) and synthetic coloring (Tartrazine, FD&C Red No. 40, or Blue No. 1) are processed foods that are labeled bad for your health. Instead, use natural dyes including saffron, paprika, or annatto.

Hidden sodium is present in soups, canned beans and canned vegetables to extend its shelf-life, and improve its texture and taste. “Three quarters of our sodium intake comes from processed foods,” states Giancoli.

Go for foods that are labeled low or reduced sodium and avoid adding salt when eating. Processed foods high in sodium are major contributor to high blood pressure and stroke.

Fats such as Trans Fats and Saturated Fats are mostly present in processed foods. Fats are use to add shelf-life and improve texture. However, these fats present in processed foods can lower the good cholesterol and increase the bad cholesterol.

Refined grains mean that the nutritional content of the food had been removed. It is the bran and germ. It is done to extend its shelf-life. Example of refined grains is corn meal, white rice, white flour and white bread.

Instead of choosing refined grains, opt for whole-wheat flour, quinoa, brown rice, oats, and more.

Refined oils such as shortening, soybean oil, and even canola oil are genetically modified and cleaned with chemicals. It is also hydrogenated so go for traditional cooking fats including pastured lard, ghee (refined butter), unrefined coconut oil, and olive oil.

There are lots of myths and facts about fats and cholesterol that often confuse most of us. Some may be misguided and started believing about certain ideas that actually are false. Are you one of those?

Here are the common myths about fats and cholesterol that you ought to know:

Myths: About Fats and Cholesterol #1: All Fats are the same. This is certainly false. There are two general types of fats, the good fats and the bad fats. Good fats are thepolyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats that are good for the heart. These fats lower the LDL or the bad cholesterol and are good for overall health of an individual.

Bad fats are the saturated fats and Trans fats. These fats are considered bad because they are harmful for the heart. These fats increase the level of bad cholesterol and increase chances for cardiovascular diseases. Bad fats are those that are solid at room temperature.

Myths: About Fats and Cholesterol #2: Fats must be eliminated in the diet. This myth is definitely not true. Fats are required by the body for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, D, E and K. Fats are crucial to keep as warm during cold season. It is also needed to have healthy hair and skin and to support neurological function.

Fats are needed to feel you are full. If you take it out from your diet, you end up piling more calories than you should. The best trick to diet is not cutting on fats, but to cut portion sizes, do exercise and lower intake of refined sugars.

Myths: About Fats and Cholesterol #4: I can consume good fats in unlimited amount. Good fats and bad fats when consumed in excess leads to weight gain. Remember that I gram of fat equals to nine calories regardless whether it is good or bad fat.

This means eating more of good fats could also lead to added pounds and more risk to health issues. Control your fat intake to 35 percent or less and choose good fats over bad fats.

Myths: About Fats and Cholesterol #5: Foods labeled Zero (0) Trans Fats are healthy choice. No, don’t be misguided by this marketing technique. When trans-fat are zero, these fats could be replaced by another bad fat known as saturated fats.

Aberdeen 15 Pound Baby: Baby Francisco Shocks Parents, Dad has To Buy New Set Of Clothes For 15 Pound Baby!

n Aberdeen, 15 pound baby was born. The baby born on Dec. 2, 2014 is one of the heaviest babies born in the U.S. According to the Examiner, Yessica Ortiz Delgado previously gave birth to her two other children who weigh almost 12 pounds, but the Aberdeen 15 pound baby was her biggest baby.

157616780 Earlier in January, a 15-pound and 2 ounces baby was born in California that beat the record of the biggest baby in America who weighs 14 pounds. The 15 pound baby was 24 inches long and just like the Aberdeen 15 pound baby, his mother was really surprised to know that she delivered a huge baby.

INQSTR reports that the mother and the baby were doing well after the baby’s birth. There’s no problem with their health and the 15-pound baby appears to be healthy with no medical attention needed. Both were doing fine and alert and they could go home in the next few days.

Grays Harbor Community Hospital, where the Aberdeen 15 pound baby was born delivers more than 500 babies yearly. The hospital reports that their average baby born weighs about 5.5 to 10 pounds, and the 15 pound baby was really a surprise for them.

The hospital director at Grays Harbor Community Hospital told the media reporters that the father of the Aberdeen 15 pound baby went out to buy new set of clothes of larger size since they were not expecting that the baby will be so big. Apparently, they were not aware that baby Francisco could be 15 pounds at birth.

“We deliver babies of all sizes, but it is not every day that we deliver and care for a baby as large as Francisco,” the director of Grays Harbor Community Hospital was quoted stating to reporters while she was expressing her surprise with the birth of the 15 pound baby from Aberdeen.

Christian Post says that the 15-pound baby born in California is the biggest baby in the world, but not the heaviest. There were also two 15-pound babies who were recently born in the year 2012 in China and in England in 2013. The largest baby born in the world is Ann Bates from Canada, who was born 23 pounds and 12 ounces in 1879.

According to Daily Mail, babies are born these days with higher birth weight due to the changes in the diet.  The current average birth weight for boys is 7 pounds 8 ounces and 7 pounds 4 ounces for girls, but with time, the rise of birth weight is not going down.

Cases of Macrosomia, the babies born beyond the tipping point (Royal College of Midwives use 8 pounds and 13 ounces as tipping point) have been leaping in years.  Research in U.K. has found that more babies were born bigger today because mothers are also overweight.

The Aberdeen 15 pound baby is a rare record for the Grays Harbor Community Hospital. The 15-pound baby was healthy despite the baby’s unbelievable weight, a blessing that the couple should thank for.

Russell Peters $21 Million Fortune, Why He was Dubbed As “Most Famous Person Nobody’s Ever Heard Of?”

Russell Peters $21 Million earnings has placed him as the top earner comedian of 2013. He has toured the world and set record breaking sales in his performances even outselling pop icon Madonna in the Emirates.

7th Annual Exploring The Arts Gala

Russel Peters $21 million made him Forbes‘ third highest-grossing comedian after Jerry Seinfeld and Terry Fator. While he’s holding his fortunes, being famous is yet a dream that he is continuously working hard to attain.

Where did Russel Peters $21 million earnings come from?

While Blacks and White Americans battle on issues of racism, Russel Peters attack on comedy is different. He tackles sensitive issues such as race relations through his satire and black comedy techniques, a genre that Americans may not be ready yet to embrace.

Russell Peters $21 million fortune in 2013 is just one of the latest millions of the comedian with Indian origin. He has been touring the world since decades and had broken the records of even the most famous performers on stage everywhere he goes.

He has been in the arena of doing standup comedy for 25 years. Russel Peters is assiduously funny, with a speedy wit and most importantly, this guy knows his audience.

Peters’ 2012 “Notorious” world tour had pocketed him multi-million earnings making it the most attended comedy show ever in Singapore, Lebanon, South Africa, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Russell Peters $21 million pay is just one point in earnings of the Toronto-born, Brampton-raised comic. In Australia, Russel Peters pocketed $2 million for two shows. In Singapore, he raised $1 million swiftly in his two-night performance. In U.K., he set a new record while he performed in front of 16,000 fans in London.

Peters’ 2012 “Notorious” world tour was the world’s third most popular comedy act in 2012 that had earned the comedian manifolds of millions.

If Russell Peters $21 million earnings is huge for 2013, how far can the comedian go with his Almost Famous world tour 2014? He performed all across Canada this fall making him the only comedian who had performed at the Air Canada Centre for the sixth time.

I like to interact with the front rows,” says Peters. “I use the interaction to take me from bit to bit. Some guys go on-stage with a script and don’t deviate from it. That’s not my style. Peters will also be delivering laughs to New York Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles Nokia Theatre in November and December.

So why Russell Peters is just “almost famous” and not famous with $21 million earnings? His popular friend Lisa Lampanelli was quoted saying why Peters is unknown to many people in America when he has 10 Bentleys.

Chris Rock even called Russell Peters the “most famous person nobody’s ever heard of.” When Forbes asked Russell Peters about his impeded success in Hollywood, the comedian with Anglo-Indian descent confidently said that it doesn’t bother him at all.

Russell Peters $21 million earnings is incredibly large. He may have no HBO special, had not appeared in the “Letterman,” “The Howard Stern Show,” or “Saturday Night Live.” But the guy whose parents were immigrants had made collections of houses in Malibu and Porsche cars through his world tour standup shows.

Russell Peters $21 million earnings is extremely huge for a comedian whose sole earning comes from his performances, how much more if he will excel in Hollywood? Would the almost famous comedian be famous?
